WATERBURY, Conn., May 15, 2000 – James C. Smith, chairman and chief executive officer, Webster Financial Corporation, the holding company for Webster Bank, today issued the following statement following the death of John V. Brennan, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer.
“All of us at Webster are greatly saddened by the passing of our dear friend John Brennan. John was totally committed to and played a pivotal role in Webster’s growth and success during the past decade. John was a key decision maker in our successful transformation into a leading regional financial services provider. Even more important was the impact that John had on the people at Webster : his exemplary behavior, his fine character, his positive attitude in the face of challenge or adversity, and his general goodness as a person. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Sue, and children, Jack, Mary Kate and Danny.”
Biographical Information on John V. Brennan
John V. Brennan has been executive vice president and chief financial officer for Webster Financial Corporation and Webster Bank since 1990. A certified public accountant, Mr. Brennan had overall responsibility for financial and accounting matters at Webster and all its subsidiaries, including mergers and acquisitions.
Prior to becoming CFO, he was senior vice president and treasurer from 1986 to 1990. Mr. Brennan came to Webster from KPMG Peat Marwick, where he served for nearly 10 years, specializing in financial institutions. Earlier, Mr. Brennan was with the internal audit staff of Hartford-based Connecticut Bank & Trust (now part of FleetBoston Financial).
Mr. Brennan had been active with the United Way of the Central Naugatuck Valley, serving as a past chairman and board member. He held a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Manhattan College. He resided in Southington with his wife, Susan, and three children, Jack, Mary Kate, and Danny.
