Webster Appoints Nathaniel C. Brinn to Executive Post, Completes Executive Reorganization of Strategic Plan

WATERBURY, Conn., Jul 26, 2002 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Webster Financial Corporation (Nasdaq: WBST), the holding company for Webster Bank, announced today the appointment of Nathaniel C. Brinn as Executive Vice President, Corporate Development for Webster Bank and Senior Vice President, Corporate Development, Webster Financial Corporation.

In this capacity, Brinn is responsible for directing Webster's corporate development, including mergers, acquisitions and strategic investments. He reports directly to Webster chairman and chief executive officer, James C. Smith.

With Brinn's appointment, Webster completes an executive reorganization aligning the company's structure with its strategic plan. Webster initiated its reorganization plans in January 2002 with the appointment of William T. Bromage as both chief operating officer and president of Webster Financial Corporation and Webster Bank.

Brinn has held senior management positions in corporate development for more than a decade with HSB Group, Inc. in Hartford, Connecticut, and with Phoenix Companies Inc., also of Hartford. In his most recent position, Brinn was senior vice president, business development and new products for HSB Group, Inc. In this capacity, he was responsible for the management of the company's acquisitions and divestitures, new product development and special projects. At Phoenix Companies Inc., Brinn was senior vice president, strategic development and president, Phoenix Strategic Capital Corporation, Phoenix' strategic venture capital subsidiary.

Prior to Phoenix, Brinn was vice president, private placements group for CIBC, Inc. in Chicago, Illinois, where he was involved in senior and subordinated private placement debt transactions.

Brinn has also served as senior investment analyst for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in New York City and Chicago.

Brinn received a B.S. from University of Delaware and an M.B.A. from Duke University's Fuqua School of Business. He also is a Chartered Financial Analyst.

Brinn resides in Avon with his wife and two daughters.
