WATERBURY, Conn., Nov. 17, 2009 — Webster Financial Corporation (NYSE: WBS), the holding company for Webster Bank, N.A., raised $1.12 million through its recently completed 2009 Employee Community Campaign for the United Way, exceeding its goal of raising more than $1 million.
The amount raised makes Webster one of Connecticut’s largest contributors to the United Way. The money will go to more than 50 United Way chapters, more than 150 United Way partner agencies and employee-designated non-profit organizations across Webster’s geographic footprint, which includes Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
Webster’s 2009 Employee Community Campaign for the United Way consisted of several one-time fundraisers over the course of the summer designed to raise awareness about the United Way and lead up to a three-week online employee pledge campaign in the fall.
“These are uncertain economic times and our employees know that means even more people will require help from the United Way and the broad safety net it provides to those most in need,” said Webster Chairman and CEO Jim Smith. “Despite a long and deep recession, a higher percentage of Webster employees pledged their support to the campaign this year than last. Through their generosity, they demonstrated their commitment to a key tenet of The Webster Way, ‘We give of ourselves in the communities we serve.’”
