WATERBURY, Conn., Oct. 5, 2010 — The public is invited to join Webster Bank in celebrating its 75th anniversary on Monday, Oct. 11, with free ice cream in 10 cities across Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
The “Day of Giving” events, which will be held 75 years to the day after Webster was founded, will feature Webster-branded treat trucks giving away free ice cream while supplies last. The “Day of Giving” celebrates 75 years of Webster helping individuals, families and businesses achieve their financial goals, and its tradition of giving back to the communities it serves, a commitment that began when the bank was founded in the Great Depression.
Harold Webster Smith founded Webster on Oct. 11, 1935, in an 11-by-38-foot office in Waterbury, Conn., when he was 24 years old. Today, Webster is a full-service regional commercial bank led by the founder’s son, James C. Smith, with $17.7 billion in assets and a service area that stretches from Westchester County, N.Y., to Boston.
The “Day of Giving” events will be held in:

- New Haven, Conn., from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the New Haven Green, Temple and Elm streets;
- Waterbury, Conn., from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Waterbury Green, West Main and North Main streets;
- Stratford, Conn., from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Paradise Green, Main Street and Huntington Road;
- New Britain, Conn., from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Walnut Hill Park, 199 Lexington Street;
- Stamford, Conn., from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Columbus Park, on Washington Boulevard between West Park Place and Main Street;
- Hartford, Conn., from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Bushnell Park, 99 Trinity Street;
- Providence, R.I., from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Providence Children’s Museum, 100 South Street; and,
- Somerset, Mass., from 2:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Webster Bank branch located at 149 Grand Army Highway (Route 6).
