WATERBURY, Conn., May 26, 2016 – Jami Dohoney, a resident of Waterbury, Conn., and vice president, business banking at Webster Bank, is an honoree of the bank's "80 Days of Giving" employee volunteer campaign. The volunteer effort is part of Webster's 80thAnniversary celebration. An awards ceremony was held May 3 at the Radisson Cromwell Hotel in Cromwell, Conn. Dohoney's volunteer effort earned $1,000 for the nonprofit of her choice – Literacy Volunteers of Greater Waterbury – which aims to teach adults to read, write, speak, and to understand English. Dohoney regularly volunteers for this group with her husband, Steve – also a Webster banker and Literacy Volunteers Board Member - and their children.
Through its Waterbury Reads project, Literacy Volunteers encourages reading by providing increased access to books through donations of new and used books that are distributed to adults and children at community events.
"Steve and I organized volunteers to support two initiatives for Waterbury Reads," Dohoney said. The first project took place during the Oct. 11 annual Mardi Gross Halloween Celebration at Library Park in downtown Waterbury where the Dohoney family and a team of Webster volunteers distributed books to children who attended.
The second project entailed sorting and organizing by age group thousands of donated books. Several times a year, Waterbury teachers are invited to re-fresh their classrooms with reading materials. The volunteers developed a system for displaying the available books, as well as making it simpler and more efficient for the teachers to pick out and exchange the books based on the age groups of their students.
"We are passionate about the development of the youth in Waterbury and are proud to be part of the Webster family where giving of ourselves in the communities we serve is encouraged," Jami Dohoney said.
The banker volunteer initiative, "80 Days of Giving," was launched October 11, 2015. In all, 103 bankers nominated volunteer activities to receive one of the 80 grants. The breadth and impact of participation stimulated even greater community involvement by Webster bankers who now contribute more than 125,000 volunteer hours annually.
